Italicized font represents information to be shared orally or physically completed with the students at this time.
Non-italicized font represents additional information included supporting the teacher’s understanding of the content being introduced within the CELL.
BRANCH OUT
Explain to students that biologists and chemists study the process of photosynthesis because it is so important for life on Earth. All of agriculture is based on the photosynthesis reaction. Therefore, anyone involved in any aspect of food production is interested in how photosynthesis works, or at least in its important results.

Slide MICRO 4-1:
In this CAP we would like for students to understand that energy from the Sun is captured by plants through the reaction of photosynthesis. This energy is used by plants to survive and grow. When an animal eats a plant, the energy captured by the plant through photosynthesis is obtained by the animal for its own growth, body repair, motion and to maintain body warmth.
Slide MICRO 4-2:
This slide shows a plant cell as discussed in the lab. Chloroplasts are organelles inside plant cells where photosynthesis takes place. The actual photosynthesis reaction is shown on the next slide.
Slide MICRO 4-3:
This slide shows the photosynthesis reaction in which the energy from the Sun is converted and stored as sugar for use as energy for the plant. The plants at the bottom of the slide indicate that the energy from photosynthesis causes the plant to grow.
Slide MICRO 4-4:
This slide once again shows that solar energy from the Sun is used by plants to grow.
Slide MICRO 4-5:
This slide discusses the fact that when animals eat plants, they obtain the energy stored in them. Remember, the energy that plants have was originally obtained through photosynthesis from solar energy.
Slide MICRO 4-6:
This slide points out to students that when one animal eats another, the original energy from the Sun is passed to the new animal. As indicated, the chain of feeding and the passing of solar energy from plants and then from one animal to the next is called a food chain.
Slide MICRO 4-7:
This final slide shows that humans are like all other animals in their requirement of energy from food. When humans eat plants or animals that have eaten plants or other animals, humans obtain the energy that was originally captured from solar energy by plant photosynthesis. Humans use this energy to repair their own tissue, maintain their body temperature, move and grow.
