Explain to students that meteorologists are scientists who study the weather. Many of the weathermen and women we see on television are trained as meteorologists.

Slide OBSERVE 3-1:

In this CAP we extend our discussion of observing and recording weather to include using weather observations and analyzing weather patterns to warn us of dangerous and severe weather. This discussion will hopefully demonstrate the importance of observing and recording data, and using patterns to draw conclusions.

Slide OBSERVE-3-2:

The top image in this slide is to remind students of their recent experience observing and recording weather data, and using patterns to draw conclusions. The bottom image shows a satellite image made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Slide OBSERVE-3-3:

This slide shows the path of hurricane Katrina over several days as see from a satellite.

Slide OBSERVE-3-4:

This slide and the following slide provide examples of severe weather. Meteorologists help save lives by predicting where and when severe and dangerous weather will occur by analyzing patterns from weather data, much like the students recorded. This allows us time to prepare and protect ourselves from injury.
