Simple Machines: Investigation 1 - One- and Two-Pulley Systems
In Investigation One, you will investigate pulley systems and forces. During this Investigation, you will:
- Measure the force of gravity of each load force.
- Use a one-pulley system to measure the force in Newtons (N) to lift a load.
- Calculate the mechanical advantage of each load by using the pulley system by using the following formula:
![]()
- Use a two-pulley system and measure the force in Newtons (N) to lift a load.
Simple Machines: Investigation 2 - First and Second Class Levers
In Investigation Two, you will explore first- and second-class levers and forces. During this Investigation, you will:
- Investigate how changing the position of the load on a first-class lever affects the effort force required to lift it.
- Calculated the load force by using the following formula:
![]()
- Construct a first-class lever.
Simple Machines: Investigation 3 - Third Class Levers
In Investigation Three, you will explore third-class levers and forces. During this Investigation, you will:
- Calculate the load force of a 100-gram weight using the following formula:
![]()
- Construct a third-class lever.
- Determine the mechanical advantage using force and distance for different positions of the fulcrum on third-class levers.
Simple Machines: Investigation 4 - Performance Assessment
This Performance Assessment is designed to allow students to solve a problem using the:
- concepts with which they have become familiar during the previous three Investigations, and
- procedures used during the previous three Investigations.
