Atomic Structure

Atomic Structure: Investigation 1 - Periodic Table of Elements

In Investigation One, you will investigate the Periodic Table of the Elements and properties of elements contained within the table. During this Investigation, you will:

  1. Use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast metals and non-metals.
  2. Identify metal and non-metal elements on the Periodic Table.
  3. Describe the physical properties of metals and non-metals.
  4. Locate elements on the Periodic Table using the following:
  • atomic number
  • periods and groups
  • atomic mass
  • symbol

Atomic Structure: Investigation 2 - Chemical Properties of Elements

In Investigation Two, you will investigate the chemical properties of elements. You will also examine the Periodic Table of the Elements in greater depth. During this Investigation, you will:

  1. Observe the reactivity of four different elements in hydrochloric acid (HCl):
  • Carbon
  • Sulfur
  • Magnesium
  • Iron

Atomic Structure: Investigation 3 - Elements and Conductivity of Electricity

In Investigation Three, you will further investigate the properties of elements and their groupings on the Periodic Table of the Elements. During this Investigation, you will:

  1. Test the conductivity of electricity of the following elements using a multimeter:
  • Copper
  • Magnesium
  • Sulfur
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Carbon
  • Aluminum

Atomic Structure: Investigation 4 - Metalloids

In Investigation Four, you will study the chemical and physical properties of metalloids. During this Investigation, you will:

  1. Analyzed the reactivity of silicon (Si), zinc (Zn), and carbon (C) in hydrochloric acid (HCl).
  2. Tested the conductivity of electricity of the following metalloids:
  • Zinc (Zn)
  • Carbon (C)
  • Silicon (Si)
  1. Organize elements as metals, non-metals, and metalloids using a Venn Diagram.
