Acids and Bases
Acids and Bases: Investigation 1 - Acids, Bases, and pH
In Investigation One, you will analyze common acids and bases by measuring their pH. During this Investigation, you will:
- Determine the pH of several different solutions that contain acids.
- Determine the pH of several different solutions that contain bases.
Acids and Bases: Investigation 2 - Serial Dilution
In Investigation Two, you will dilute a solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) using a technique called serial dilution and then determined the pH of the different dilutions. During this Investigation, you will:
- Prepare six (6) centrifuge tubes to perform a technique called serial dilution to dilute an acid five (5) times.
- Determine the hydrogen ion concentration of each solution by measuring its pH.
Acids and Bases: Investigation 3 - Neutralization
In Investigation Three, you will neutralize solutions of an acid using two different bases. During this Investigation, you will:
- Neutralize a solution of hydrochloric acid using an antacid medication, which is considered a base.
- Neutralize a solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) using a 150 ml solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in increments of 10 ml.
- Measure the pH of the HCl solution each time 10ml of NaOH solution is added.
Acids and Bases: Investigation 4 - Performance Assessment
This Performance Assessment is designed to allow students to solve a problem using the:
- concepts with which they have become familiar during the previous three Investigations, and
- procedures used during the previous three Investigations.
