BRANCH OUT

Explain to students that architects and builders design and build structures that provide shelter for us. In nature, animals use naturally occurring objects and structures for protection. Biologists and naturalists study animals and animal behavior.

Slide TIME 2-1:

In this CAP we want to extend the melting ice cube lab demonstration in Investigation 2 and consider how humans and animals use structures for protection and shelter.

Slide TIME-2-2:

In the lab, demonstration students observed that the ice cube that was placed under the hot lamp melted faster than the ice not placed under the lamp. This slide is included to simply prompt students to recall this demonstration.

Slide TIME-2-3:

This slide shows one example of an animal (lion) using a structure (tree/bush) for protection. The tree provides shade by blocking the Sun’s rays from directly striking the ground beneath the tree.

Ask students where they think it would be hotter or cooler, in the open sun or in the shade? Why do they think the lion is sitting under the tree?

Slide TIME-2-4:

This slide outlines a very short activity students can do in pairs or groups in the classroom. Students may build a cave of books to cover a pencil or eraser, for example. If time permits, students can be asked to design more than one structure to keep their object in the shade.

Slide TIME-2-5:

TIME2CAP.005

This final slide gives three examples of structures that we can use for protection from the Sun and rain. Notice that some structures that can be used for protection and shelter are man-made (umbrella, tent) while others occur naturally (cave). Students might give more examples.
