During this CELL, students will conduct several investigations focused on exploring their health and hygiene. Students will investigate the proper ways to care for their bodies. As they perform these investigations, students will practice ways in which they will remove the most germs from their bodies and prevent germs from spreading. Students will develop an understanding of the importance of keeping their hearts healthy by diet and exercise. Through these investigations, students will develop both their observational skills and their understanding of health and hygiene.

Investigation 1: Hands and Hygiene

In Investigation One, students will be introduced to the concepts of health and hygiene. Through the use of models and diagrams, students will develop a beginning understanding of how poor hygiene promotes the spread of bacteria and germs. In addition, they will learn how to properly wash their hands.

Investigation 2: Staying Healthy     

Investigation Two gives students the opportunity to explore why we cover our mouths when we sneeze or cough. Through modeling students will realize that if they do not cover their mouths they may pass their germs on to their friends or family members.

Investigation 3: Dental Hygiene   

In Investigation Three, students will discuss what to expect during a visit to the dentist. Students will develop an understanding for practicing good hygiene. In addition, they will learn how brushing and flossing are effective means for removing plaque from their teeth.

Investigation 4: Fitness and Health

During Investigation Four, students will use a stethoscope to help them determine heart rate. They will learn how to use a bar graph to analyze data that they collect. In addition, students will learn why exercise is important to help keep their heart healthy.
