Directions

Part One:

  1. Read the story with your child.
  2. Talk about the story. What happened? Who are the characters? Could this story be real?
  3. Discuss with your child what a “fact” is (something that is true or that really happened).
  4. Ask your child to find a fact in the story.
  5. Discuss with your child what “fiction” means (something imaginary, not true, or that did not really happen).
  6. Ask your child to identify something fictional from the story.

Part Two:

  1. Tell your child you are going to play a “fact or fiction” game.
  2. Ask your child to stand about 15 feet away from you.
  3. Tell your child a statement that is either fact or fiction.
  4. Ask your child to tell you whether the statement was fact or fiction.
  5. If your child guesses correctly, he or she may take a step toward you. If your child answers incorrectly, he or she should stand still.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until your child steps to where you are standing.

Extend this workout

  • Identify a fiction and a non-fiction book at the library/bookstore or at home.
  • Ask your child to identify facts and fiction that he or she sees while watching television or a movie.
  • Play the game portion with two children to see which child can reach the endpoint first.
