MINDSET

This Performance Assessment is designed to:

  • allow students to utilize their knowledge of properties of matter as they observe properties of two unknown substances and compare them to four known mixtures.
  • encourage students to apply their knowledge of properties of matter as they predict the identity of the unknown substances based on their observations.
  • promote problem-solving skills by encouraging students to find appropriate solutions to problems.
  • assess students’ understanding of pH.
  • assess students’ understanding of solubility and miscibility.
  • assess students’ understanding of chemical and physical changes.

Students problem-solving skills incorporate:

  • Science: understanding that hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion concentrations influence the chemical property of pH.
  • Technology: understanding that there are even more precise instruments than pH paper to accurately determine pH.
  • Math: understand that hydroxide and hydrogen ion concentrations are measured by pH.
