Calculation of Density
1. The density of an object is defined as the amount of matter contained in the space the object occupies.
2. To calculate the density of an object or substance, determine the mass and volume of the object. Obtain the mass in units of grams. Obtain the volume in units of ml or cm3. Remember that 1ml of liquid = 1 cm3 of the liquid.
3. Use the following formula to determine the density of the object or substance.
density = mass / volume or mass ÷ volume
density = mass divided by volume
4. If necessary, review the example below to help you in your calculations.
