The human body is organized into systems that are made up of many parts and that these systems each perform both individual and complementary functions that occur at the same time in the body.

BRANCH OUT

Athletic trainers and sports medicine doctors help athletes perform at the highest levels they can. In addition, they help athletes to recover from injuries so that they can once again perform at their maximum potential.

BE PREPARED

Class Materials: Group Materials:
  • 1-liter pitcher
  • 1 L water
  • 5 400 ml beakers
  • 1 human torso
  • 1 stopwatch or timer
  • 1 human body flip chart 1 glass stir rod
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 plastic funnel
  • 2 plastic droppers
  • 1 piece of large plastic tubing, 12 cm long X 13 mm diameter
Individual Materials: Pair materials:
  • 1 Scientist Data Record
  • 1 stethoscope
  • 6 alcohol swabs

Teacher Preparation

1. Fill the liter pitcher with water. Add 10 drops of red food coloring and stir. Fill five 400 ml beakers with 200 ml of red water.

2. Place the human torso and flip chart at a central location in the lab.

3. Place the materials needed at a central distribution point.

4. Separate the class into cooperative pairs. Students will be separated into five cooperative groups for Trials 2 and 3.

Trial 1

Students will answer the following questions:

  • What is the function of the circulatory system?
  • How does your heart respond to exercise?

Trial 2

  • Students will answer the following question:
  • What is the function of the circulatory system?

Trial 3

Students will answer the following question:

  • What is the function of the heart?
  • What is the function of the circulatory system?

INVESTIGATE

1. Direct each student pair to obtain the following necessary materials from the distribution point: one (1) stethoscope and six (6) alcohol swabs. Student groups will need the following necessary materials for Trials 2 and 3: one (1) plastic funnel, two (2) plastic droppers, one (1) piece of large plastic tubing, and one (1) 400 ml beaker filled with 200 ml of red water.
