ASK WHY

The human body is organized into systems that are made up of many parts and that these systems each perform both individual and complementary functions that occur at the same time in the body.

BRANCH OUT

Radiologists help patients and physicians “see” inside the human body. They use special machines and technologies such as X-rays, ultrasound, CAT scans and MRIs to view the respiratory system.  Radiologists can tell if a patients does or does not have pneumonia or other lung  diseases using these techniques.  The same technologies are used by radiology technicians and perinatologists, physicians who treat babies while they are inside a mother, to view a baby’s lungs.

    3. Review the Teacher Video in preparation for the Lab.

GET FOCUSED

Students will answer the following questions:

    • What is the function of the respiratory system?
    • How does exercise affect your respiratory rate?

Trial 2

Students will answer the following questions:

    • What is the function of the respiratory system?
    • What happens to the lungs as air is inhaled and exhaled.

Trial 3

Students will answer the following questions:

    • What is the function of the respiratory system?
    • Do all lungs hold the same amount of air?

INVESTIGATE

  1. Direct each student group to obtain the following necessary materials from the distribution point:
    (1) water bottle
    one (1) balloon
