The Human Body

Performance Assessment – PreLab

ASK WHY

The human body is organized into systems that are made up of many parts and that these systems each perform both individual and complementary functions that occur at the same time in the body.

BRANCH OUT

Physicians help people take care of their bodies. They find ways to make the body work better and to treat it when it gets sick.

STEM MINDSET

This Performance Assessment is designed to:

  • promote problem-solving skills by encouraging students to find appropriate solutions to problems.
  • encourage planning and reasoning as students work together to determine the impact of a bicycle injury on each system of the human body.
  • assess students’ understanding of the systems and functions of the human body.

Students problem-solving skills incorporate:

  • Science: understanding structures and functions of the human body
  • Technology: operation of fixed pulleys and metric rulers
  • Math: comparison of metric distance, calculation of heart rate

SLIDE BODY-PA-1

This brief presentation gives students a short overview of the Performance Assessment they will experience in the lab.

SLIDE BODY-PA-2

Tell students that they will have the role of a physician in the Performance Assessment.

Discuss the types of things that physicians need to understand:

Science: Physicians understand how the human body works. They know about the functions of parts of the body and systems of the body. They can find when a body part is functioning well and when it might not be functioning well.

Technology: Physicians use stethoscopes, otoscopes, and other technologies that allow them to “see” into the human body.

SLIDE BODY-PA-3

This slide is a continuation of the previous slide and lists two more types of information that physicians need to understand:

Math: Physicians use math when measuring heart rate, respiratory rate, and volume, calculating glucose levels, etc.

Engineering: Orthopedic surgeons have to think of how body parts move, how much weight can be on body parts and how to fix or change how body parts work.

SLIDE BODY-PA-4

Review concepts about the body systems explored in Investigations 1-5 with students. Remind students that in the Performance Assessment, they will be physicians. In order to be a good physician, it’s important to know about the body systems.

Six systems we investigated were:

  • Circulatory System
  • Respiratory System
  • Digestive System
  • Nervous System
  • Skeletal System
  • Muscular System

SLIDE BODY-PA-5

Read over the paragraph in the Student Data Record that sets up the students for their roles in the Performance Assessment and establishes the goals.

______________________________________________

SLIDE BODY-PA-6

Read over the goals for the Performance Assessment. Encourage students to consider the following questions:

  • What do I know about body systems and the parts that make up each system?
  • How can I use what I know to solve each part of the problem?

SLIDE BODY-PA-7

Divide students into groups for the Performance Assessment. Suggestions for grouping include groups of three or one group per lab table.

The groups will work together to consider what they need to know for the Performance Assessment as well as in the lab.

Encourage each group to discuss each of the four questions using their Student Data Record. By discussing the questions, students are able to review concepts needed in the Performance Assessment.
