Investigation One Summary – Lab Goals

In Investigation One, you analyzed common acids and bases by measuring their pH. During this Investigation, you:

1. Determined the pH of several different solutions that contain acids.

2. Determined the pH of several different solutions that contain bases.

Investigation One Summary – Learning Goals

Through these experiments, you concluded that:

  1. Acids release H+ ions when they are mixed with water and bases remove H+ ions when they are mixed with water.
  2. Stronger acids are able to release more H+ ions when mixed with water resulting in a higher concentration of H+ ions. Weaker acids release fewer H+ ions resulting in a lower concentration of H+ ions.
  3. Stronger bases are able to remove more H+ ions when mixed with water resulting in a lower concentration of H+ ions. Weaker bases remove fewer H+ ions resulting in a higher concentration of H+ ions.
