Creation and Completion of a Pie Graph

1. Pie graphs are used to display and organize data in a circle or a pie.

2. First, decide what the whole circle represents. In the sample graph, the circle represents the total number of students in Miss Davis’s class.

3. Decide what is illustrated by shading the circle. In the sample graph, the shading will illustrate the number of students in Miss Davis’s class who are wearing jackets.

4. Next, find out how much of the circle should be shaded. This can be found by counting, reading, or observing. By counting the number of people wearing jackets, we know that 15 of the 20 students in Miss Davis’s class are wearing jackets.

5. Shade the correct amount of the circle or pie. In Miss Davis’s class, more than half of the students are wearing jackets. We also know that less than all of the students are wearing jackets. Therefore, some but not all of the pie is shaded.
